Measuring diaspora populations and their socio‐economic profiles: Australia’s Chinese diaspora

Abstract Data on diasporas are incomplete, inaccurate, and beset by definitional fluidity as the concept itself evolves. Despite their significant role in homeland development, members of a diaspora population typically passed over origin countries’ censuses, policies planning rely instead statistics generated destination countries. To analyse data available from countries, this article deploys two coordinated concepts—diaspora transnationalism. We construct demographic socio‐economic profile Chinese Australia spanning 2000–2016. That work is based 2016 Australian Census Migrants Integrated Dataset (ACMID) Temporary Entrants (ACTEID) micro‐files sourced Bureau Statistics. The disaggregated permanent or temporary residency status, visa, citizenship, stratified geographic distribution, compared with that Australia’s overall migrant population. Nuanced understandings size, composition, integration into lays baseline necessary for policymakers agencies countries they toward more targeted engagement practices. Those also inform retention strategies concerning groups can enhance economic social inclusion.
